Our church recently reflected on this by reading through the Scriptures together and listening to several spoken word pieces produced in our community that address this theme. Listen in and reflect with us.

Freedom is Coming to Bondage

The purpose of Advent is to look back to Christ's first coming and look forward to his promised second coming. We begin our celebration of Advent by looking back to the freedom Jesus brings to our bondage and looking forward to the freedom he will bring to all of creation. Listen in as we reflect on the bondage we are born into and the freedom Jesus brings.

Countercultural Submission

The gospel calls for Christians to both lead and follow in countercultural ways. Leaders are to lead out of a sincere desire to serve others without any motivation to serve themselves. As they do so they are to be examples to the flock of what it means to follow Jesus in the city of man. They are not to do this for any earthly reward of any sort. They are to do it because they will one day stand before the Chief Shepherd who will give them an eternal reward. Likewise, God calls Christians to submit to the leaders of the church. Peter specifically mentions young people, since they are most likely to resist submission, but his command is applicable to everyone. Both leaders and followers are to be clothed in humility before God and each other. This is easy to say but impossible to do. Leaders often lead from the wrong motivations because they feel that above all they need to protect themselves and look out for themselves. Those under their care often resist submission because they also feel they need to protect themselves and look out for themselves. But Peter tells us how we can become the people he describes. Instead of looking out for ourselves we are to "cast all our anxiety on him because he cares" for us. When we truly believe that Jesus is our Chief Shepherd we can cast all of our cares on him and obey his commands to lead in humility and submit in humility.

Countercultural Relationships

"Married and bored...single and lonely." According to one American philosopher those are our only two options. But he is wrong. The Scriptures tell us that our only two options are to either submit to God in any given relationship or to not submit to God in that relationship. The Bible teaches that our human relationships are directly related to our relationship with God. Thus, if we want to judge our spiritual health a good place to start is by looking at our relationships with other people. Listen in as we examine our relationship with God by examining our relationships with others.

Countercultural Community

As the tale of two cities continues we are introduced to the tension that surrounds the concept of community. And how are Christians supposed to live in community within both cities? Listen in as we turn to 1Peter 2:1-10.

If anyone was countercultural it was Jesus. Those who worship Jesus are called to follow him by also living countercultural lives -- both in how they live and why they live how they live.
Countercultural Counterculture

Since the day Christ established his Church his people have had to live in two cities -- the city of man and the city of God. This dual-citizenship is a source of tension, suffering, and sometimes persecution. The Apostle Peter knew this tension well. He wrote a letter, 1Peter, to comfort Christians who were coming face-to-face with suffering and to tell them how to live well in both cities. Listen in as we begin our study of 1Peter to discover how the Church ought to live as a city within the city.

To provide an apologetic is to provide a defense of a certain position, to give reasons to believe something. Everyone engages in the task of apologetics on some level. This task is especially important to the Christian who must provide reasons for why one should believe in Jesus Christ and follow him. How do we do this? On the eve of his death Jesus prayed that his followers would go beyond using apologetics and become the apologetic. Listen in as we look at Jesus' prayer for his followers.

Christ and the Transparency of His People

Every one of us says that we dislike hypocrites - people who pretend to be what they are not. Yet, truth be told, we are all hypocrites. We are all actors. In our relationships with other people we do not allow them to see our true selves, we allow them to see the character we have created for ourselves. This character is attractive and is designed to appeal to our audience and to protect our true self from being exposed. It's not that we don't want to be known. We just don't want certain parts of us to be known. So we wear masks. This is simply the reality of our lives. But as the People of God we are called and empowered to be transparent to the deepest level. Listen in as we explore what causes us to wear masks and what frees us from our need from them.

What's God Got to Do With My Money part 2

When we look at money through the lens of the gospel we see that its primary purpose is to glorify God. One of the ways we glorify God with our resources is through giving to the local church. Listen in as we look at 2Corinthians 8 and 9 to see why, how, and how much God desires we give.

What's God Got to Do With My Money part 1

What's God got to do with my money? This is a good question. One that should be asked. And one that should be answered. But it cannot be answered by the ideas of the culture or by the ideas of the church. It must be answered by the gospel of Jesus Christ. So listen in as we learn to look at money through the lens of the gospel.

The God Who Loves

Through the experience of Jonah we have seen Yahweh, the Lord, reveal himself as the God who pursues, the God who saves, and the God who shows mercy. Now, in the fourth and final chapter of the story of Jonah, we see Yahweh as the God who loves. Jonah discovers that his love is unlike Yahweh's love and it makes him uncomfortable. Listen in as the Lord teaches us about who and how he loves.

Pursuing Racial Reconciliation

Racism is alive and well in our culture. That alone is grievous. But even more disturbing is the fact that racism is alive and well in the American Church. This is especially disturbing as the Church claims that Jesus has eliminated racial and national divisions to create a new people. In Christ there is neither "Greek nor Jew...slave nor free" for he has destroyed "the dividing wall of hostility." This is the testimony of Scripture but the testimony of our local churches is quite different.

Clearly the problem is not with the gospel but with the people who claim to believe it. Moreover, the problem is perpetuated not only by individual sin but by the church institution itself. Followers of Jesus must choose between church as usual and church as God sees it. For those who choose to see church as God sees it racial reconciliation is not optional, it is essential.

Listen in as our special guest, Ernie Cathcart of Seattle, addresses the issues of race, privilege, and reconciliation.

The God Who Shows Mercy

We learn a lot about Yahweh, the Lord, through the experience of his reluctant prophet, Jonah. As Jonah fled we were introduced to Yahweh as the God who pursues. As Jonah sunk to his certain death we were introduced to Yahweh as the God who saves. Now as God again speaks to Jonah we are introduced to Yahweh as the God who shows mercy. Listen in as we hear more about Yahweh, the God who shows mercy both to his own people (who should know better) and to his most violent of enemies.

The God Who Pursues

When you hear the name "Jonah" it is likely you think of a fantastic story about a big fish. But the book of Jonah is about so much more than a big fish. It is also about so much more than Jonah himself. The book is about Yahweh, the Lord, and how he interacts with his creation. In this first sermon of a four part series on Jonah we are introduced to Yahweh as the God who pursues his people through human obedience and disobedience alike. Listen in as we learn of Yahweh through the experience of Jonah.

None of us likes to be asked to do the impossible. It makes us feel powerless. But sometimes it seems that this is exactly what Jesus is asking of us -- the impossible.
What do you value and treasure? This is a vitally important question. Jesus teaches that our heart will be devoted to serving and protecting whatever we treasure. Invariably, what we treasure will determine how we live and love. In his famous Sermon on the Mount Jesus draws a distinction between earthly treasures and heavenly treasures and exhorts us to lay one down for the other.
The Kingdom, Relationships, and Love

Most of us think of ourselves as loving people. But it seems that our idea of being loving is different from Jesus' idea of being loving. We find it relatively easy to love those who love us and be kind to those who look like us, think like us, and live like us. But Jesus calls us to love our enemies. He calls us to love those who insult us, humiliate us, steal from us, take advantage of us, and do us harm. This seems to be so contrary to our nature and experience that the natural response is, "how?" Listen in as we allow Jesus to teach us to love as he loves.

The Kingdom, Relationships, and Truth

People lie for a reason. Some lie out of shame or embarassment. Some lie to protect others, or to protect themselves. Some lie to avoid conflict or confrontation. Some lie in order to get others to do and think what they want them to do and think. Lies, for whatever reason, are destructive to our relationships with God and each other. Because Jesus is concerned about our relationships with God and one another Jesus is also very concerned about truth and lies. For Jesus this is not just an issue of morality or accuracy, it is something much more profound. Listen in as we look at truth and lies in light of the gospel.

God Loves Sex and So Should You

Everyone is talking about sex. Everyone except, in many cases, the Church. This is odd since God created sex and God loves sex. The Church should love sex too. If anyone should be talking about sex it should be those who worship the God who created it. But it is not enough to simply talk about sex, we must talk about it in light of the Gospel. Whether single or married we must all re-learn sex in light of the Gospel.
The Kingdom, Relationships, and Anger

Anger is a powerful emotion. It is a common emotion. It is a God-given emotion. Nevertheless is can be destructive to relationships, and relationships are central to the message of Scripture. They are the primary thing destroyed in the fall of man and the primary thing restored in the Kingdom of God. Jesus says that this kingdom has arrived in his own person and ministry and that through him human beings can be restored to a proper relationsip with God, humanity, and creation at large. As he explains in the Sermon on the Mount, this has serious implications for our understanding of anger. Listen in as we explore this together.

The Kingdom Fulfilled

In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus claims that he is the fulfillment of all of Sacred Scripture. This, of course, is a grand claim with tremendous implications for Jewish, Christian, and agnostic alike. How does it shape our understanding of Jesus? Of the Old Testament?
The Kingdom Influence

"You are the salt of the earth..." "You are the light of the world..." These famous words of Jesus paint a brilliant and shocking word picture of the Church. That picture is enhanced when these metaphors are examined within their historical and cultural context. Listen in as we discuss these metaphors and Jesus' warnings that accompany them to see what they tell us about today's Church and its mission.

The Kingdom Opened

The Sermon on the Mount is one of Jesus' most famous sermons. Just as famous as the sermon itself is Jesus' introduction to the sermon -- the Beatitudes. Over the years many have argued over how to interpret Jesus' pronouncements of blessing and, once interpreted, how they should be applied. Listen in as we begin our series on the Sermon on the Mount and discuss the interpretation and application of Jesus' famous beatitudes.

Play Your Role

All of us love a good story. Whether in film, literature, or personal conversation there is something inside of each of us that responds to a good story. And most of these stories have several elements in common -- setting, character, conflict, climax, resolution. But there is something more. Most stories are about redemption. And whether the story is fiction or non-fiction we respond to this theme of redemption because redemption is not only beautiful, it is the ultimate cry of the human heart. And as much as each of these stories reflects the theme of redemption they also borrow from and point to a much greater story. This story is not merely a story with a redemptive theme -- it is itself the redemptive story. In this story we are both the audience and the participants. We have a role to play in the story that makes sense of all other stories. Listen in as we look to the Scriptures to find out why and how we are to play our role.

Freedom to Carry Burdens

With this sermon we conclude our study of Paul's letter to the Galatians. Paul spent the first 5 chapters building his case -- that in Christ alone, by grace alone, through faith alone we are freed from our burdens and restraints. In the closing chapter, though, Paul tells us that we are freed for a purpose and that as liberated people we ought to freely replace our old burdens with new ones. But these burdens are not the product of enslavement. They are the product of genuine liberation. Listen in as we discover what burdens we have been freed to carry.

Freedom to Walk in the Spirit

If we are not bound by the Law how do we know whether or not we are pleasing God? If we are not slaves to religious rules how do we judge whether we are spiritually mature or immature? If our guide is not a "timeless formula" how do we know when we are in God's will? The author of Galatians argues that the answer is not found in the Law or in the flesh but in the Spirit and in love. Specifically, we can gauge our spiritual health by looking at how we function in community. Listen in as we wrestle with the differences between a community of the flesh and a community of the Spirit.

Freedom to Live Free

Humans hunger for true freedom. We long for it. We pray for it. And when we receive it we rightly rejoice. But as beautiful as freedom is it is not without its challenges. Living in the freedom we have been given can be exceedingly difficult. This was true of the Israelites after their exodus from Egypt. This is also true of those who have found freedom in Jesus. Paul says that those who live in the freedom Christ provides are "walking in the Spirit." Listen in as we discuss what it means to walk in the Spirit.

Freedom to Be Thankful

Technology changes, culture changes, theory changes -- but human nature remains the same. In the ancient historical account of Abraham and his family we see a reflection of ourselves. Though God had made a promise that could only be fulfilled by divine power, Abraham chose to take matters into his own hands and rely on human effort and power to do God's will. How often are we tempted to do the same thing? Listen as we allow the Apostle Paul to show us what we can learn from the story of Abraham.

Freedom to Become

"Becoming" is another one of MTV's non-music programs. This show allows fans to "become" their favorite celebrity. They are dressed like them, made up like them, and given the opportunity to perform like them. Most of us find this laughable (or even sad). But the truth is that we, too, are trying to become like other people. Regardless of our age we are all still in the process of becoming who and what we want to be. And as we continue in that process of becoming we all have a picture in our minds of who and what we want to become. Though that picture is likely not shaped by the people one might see on MTV, if we are honest with ourselves, we will see that our picture of who and what we want to become has been shaped by other people. It is likely a composite of several people we admire and perhaps even a reaction to people we despise. This picture of who and what we want to become wields great influence over our values, our decisions, our choice of friends, and more. Listen in as we continue our study of Galatians and examine what the Scriptures have to say about this process and picture of becoming.

Freedom to Be God's Child

It has often been said that "we are all God's children." It is interesting, though, that this was not the teaching of Jesus or his Apostles. Though Scripture affirms that we are all God's creation it also affirms that we are all born estranged from God. If our life is allowed to take its natural course we will remain estranged from God and live in bondage to another father, the Devil. But our life need not take its "natural" course. God has provided a way for all people of all backgrounds, of all types, and of any status to be freed from bondage and adopted as His child. Listen in as we review the words of Jesus and Paul on being a child of God.

Freedom from Condemnation

All of humanity stands equally condemned before a good, just, omniscient, and omnipotent God. We have committed innumerable offenses in word, thought, and deed. We may find this claim uncomfortable, or even offensive. But even those of us who reject the testimony of Scripture and the God of the Bible still find ourselves condemned by our own conscience and our own words. We all struggle to find ways to overcome our guilt and break free from condemnation. The message of the Gospel is that true freedom from condemnation is available to all. Listen in as we read Paul's ancient letter to the Galatians and ask, "how can we be free from condemnation?"

Freedom Through Faith Alone

According to the Scriptures the Cross of Christ is the key to our freedom. But it seems as though some human response may be necessary, because though all who are freed are freed through the Cross not all are freed. So what makes the difference? It feels natural for us to want to add our own efforts, work, morality, and merit to the Cross of Christ. But Jesus and his Apostles testify that all we can contribute to our freedom is faith -- and faith alone. So what is faith? How do we apply it? How does it make us free? Listen in as we journey into the third chapter of Galatians to find answers and encounter Jesus.

Freedom from Pressure

We are probably more like Jason Lee's title character in the sitcom "My Name is Earl" than we would like to admit. Much like Earl spends each episode of the show trying to do enough good to make up for all of his mistakes, part of each of us believes that everything is riding on our virtuous behavior: our good fortune, our future, our status with other people, our standing before God. We believe that when we do good, good will return to us and when we do bad, bad will return to us. This makes for a high-pressure life. And the pressure does not let up. We try our best to be good, then when we fail we feel guilty, then we try even harder to be good in order to make up for our guilt. The cycle is a vicious one, and many of us make ourselves slaves to it. Our culture makes it very easy for us to become slaves to the pressure to perform. Is there freedom from this pressure? Listen in as we read more of Paul's letter to the Galatians and discover that the problem of pressure is not a new one.

Freedom from Nationalism

There are over 190 independent countries in our world. Each of these countries has its own land, its own government, its own culture, and its own national interests. Throughout human history these national distinctions have served to divide human beings and breed hostilities between the people of one nation and the people of another. This is largely due to what is called "nationalism" - excessive patriotism or the policy of asserting the interests of one's own nation without respect to the interests of other nations.

By its very nature, nationalism divides. One need not look far to see that nationalism is alive and well in our modern world and that it is dividing humanity into mutually exclusive camps. Is there any hope for peace? Any hope for unity? Any hope to break free from nationalism? Listen in as we read through Paul's ancient letter to the churches he founded in Galatia and see how he addressed the problem of nationalism.

Freedom from the Past

The past has power beyond the past. Psychology, history, and personal experience all testify to that. So much power, in fact, that it has been said that we may be slaves to our past: slaves to regret and guilt for things we have done, slaves to shame and anger for things done to us, slaves to relational habits developed and strengthened with each day and each repetition. Must this always be so? Or can we be freed from our past? Listen in as we delve into the autobiography of the Apostle Paul.

Freedom through the Cross Alone

Movies and television often deal with the theme of escape -- be it from prison, slavery, or elsewhere. It is likely that audiences find such drama compelling because all of us feel bound in some way and all of us long for true and complete freedom. The philosophies and religions of our culture each propose a number of different keys as the means to our freedom. But do these keys deliver what they promise? Listen in as we explore Paul's ancient letter to the churches in Galatia and examine the key to our freedom.

Freedom from Evil

Although human slavery is no longer accepted in the West, millions of humans are still enslaved in a slavery even more evil than what we remember from our history books. But just as there is a slavery more evil than that of our history there is also a freedom more liberating than any freedom granted through political means. This is an emancipation that allows even those who are enslaved to live in liberty and without which even those who are free live as slaves. It is the freedom from evil itself - both within and without. Listen in as we explore Paul's ancient letter to the churches in Galatia and discover how we can be freed from evil.
